My Favourite Posts
In “Under fire in Afghanistan” I see what it is like to be shot at for the first time. The post includes the video tribute that I put together for the soldiers during an embed with 40 Commando Royal Marines in Helmand, southern Afghanistan. Christmas 2007.
Another hotspot I have reported from on a number of occasions is the Democratic Republic of Congo. In September 2008 my team made a film that subsequently won the prestigious David Bloom award and was nominated for an Emmy. In “Welcome to hell” I give the story behind the news report.
In August 2009 I returned to Eastern DRC. After a tough but fascinating journey through the jungle we made a film about the Coltan mineral trade that is ran by armed gangs. Despite my camera breaking and having to shoot on a consumer handycam we made an interesting and important film. “When things fall apart” is the story of how it all came together.
Part of the purpose of this website is to inform and with that in mind I wrote Bgan’s: What are they and how do they work? This post is an introduction to how News crews feed our pictures from all over the world using a dish the size of a laptop.
