Orla Guerin the Correspondent I worked with for nearly a year in Africa has been awarded the prestigious David Bloom award for our piece from Kibati Refugee Camp in Goma, Eastern Congo. The award was given at the Annual TV and Radio Correspondents Dinner in Washington with President Barrack Obama in attendance.

Although I’m disappointed not to have been mentioned by the award panel it’s still a great testament to the work we did in very trying circumstances.

  1. This really is a fantastic piece. Congratulations on the award. They might not have mentioned you, but it’s all in the pictures. Fact.

Just to let you know, we used this piece very prominantly in the 10′s RTS entry which won for Best News Programme. So that’s another notch. In fact, I think we used a lot of your stuff. Karen Allen in Kenya, and did you do the Nkunda stuff with Orla also?

I love the line “We saw youngsters in distress, and helped drag them to safety”…cleverly missing out…”but only after I had done a rather nifty PTC in front of them all”.

How many takes did you do before Orla waded in? And you were clearly no help at all, neither use nor ornament as my mother would say.

But I think that probably defines you as having that strong news instinct in your bones.

Seriously. It’s very powerful stuff. Congratulations again. And even more galling that you are an excellent editor as well as cameraman.

    Best, Ant
